How to Eliminate Fan Noise During Quiet Theatrical Scenes

How to Eliminate Fan Noise During Quiet Theatrical Scenes

Updated 12 October 2026

Quick 30-Second Fix

To reduce fan noise, set the fixture's fan profile to Silent or Studio. For Silent, go to MENU > PERSONALITY > FAN MODE > SILENT. [confirm: the equivalent menu path for Studio, as the path above ends at SILENT]

Note: Silent mode automatically throttles maximum LED brightness when thermal thresholds are met. The fixture keeps its fans quiet by lowering light output instead of speeding the fans up. [confirm: whether Studio mode also throttles brightness in this way]

Step-by-Step Diagnostic and Resolution Procedure

1. Open the fan profile menu

Navigate to MENU > PERSONALITY > FAN MODE.

2. Select the correct fan profile

Choose the profile that matches the venue and the output you need. Each profile trades noise against cooling and brightness differently.

  • Auto: Fan speed scales dynamically with thermistor temperature. A thermistor is a temperature sensor, so the fans speed up as the fixture heats up and slow down as it cools. This gives the best balance of performance and cooling.

  • Silent: Forces the internal fans to run continuously at low RPM (<26 dBA). The LED current throttles automatically to prevent overheating. [confirm: measurement conditions for the <26 dBA figure, such as distance]

  • Studio: Maintains low noise levels while attempting mid-range output optimization. [confirm: what "mid-range output" means in practice, and how Studio differs from Silent in fan speed and brightness]

  • High: Forces the fans to 100% constant speed regardless of temperature. Use it in high ambient heat or outdoor enclosures, where the surrounding air gives the fixture less capacity to shed heat.

3. Manage intensity limits in Silent mode

When a fixture is set to Silent, plan your total output needs in advance.

If a fixture drops intensity mid-show, it is performing necessary thermal self-preservation. It is not a fault. The fans in Silent mode do not speed up to compensate, so the fixture lowers its light output to stay within safe temperatures.

To reduce the chance of this happening:

  1. Avoid sustained full-white looks, which produce the most heat.

  2. Use additional Silent-mode fixtures running at lower individual dimming levels. Spreading the output across more fixtures lowers the heat each one has to manage.

  3. If the show needs full output for long periods and the venue can tolerate more fan noise, consider a different profile from step 2.

Technical Background and Prevention

In Silent mode, the firmware's priority shifts from maximum brightness output to thermal limit enforcement.

If the heatsink temperature reaches internal thermal limits, the microcontroller automatically reduces current to the LED driver. This maintains safe junction temperatures without increasing fan RPM. The junction is the point inside the LED where heat is generated, so keeping it within limits protects the LED. [confirm: the thermal limit values, if they may be published]
