How do I unlock a fixture whose menu is locked?

Updated 12 October 2026

Before you start

A locked menu usually means the fixture's control panel is deliberately blocking changes. Fixtures are often locked to stop accidental changes in a busy venue or on tour.

Also, on many IP65 rated fixtures the keypad lock is on by default. This avoids unintentional changes to fixture settings caused by things like raindrops and other debris creating false touches.

The lock does not normally indicate a fault, and it does not normally affect DMX control of the fixture.

The unlock method depends on the type of lock and on the fixture.

Identify the type of lock

Locks on fixtures generally fall into one of these types:

  • Keypad lock. The buttons are disabled until a specific button action is performed.

  • Automatic lock. The panel locks itself after a period of inactivity and unlocks with the same action as a keypad lock. Many times this can be set up via the fixture menu.

  • Password or PIN lock. The menu asks for a code before it allows changes. This is generally implemented on specific menu items, such as the "service" menu, which contain settings that affect the performance of the fixture.

Unlock the fixture

  1. Confirm that the fixture is powered and that the display is on. If the display is dark, often the problem is power, hibernation mode or display settings, not a menu lock.

  2. Read the display. Note any message that mentions a lock, a password, or a code.

  3. For keypad locks, there are 2 different types of keypad lock sequence used by ADJ:

    • In most cases, hold down "Menu" for a specified number of seconds. There will be an onscreen countdown. This will unlock the fixture.

    • If the fixture has been placed in a lock mode requiring a passcode, or if that is the default keypad lock for that fixture type, press the following sequence: [UP] [DOWN] [UP] [DOWN] [ENTER]. The menu should unlock.

  4. Once the panel responds, open the menu and make your adjustments as needed.

Change the keypad lock setting

You can update the keypad lock on most fixtures under the Personality/Display/Lock settings on the fixture menu.

In most cases for ADJ fixtures, the options in the "Lock" settings in the menu are:

  • OFF

  • ON: press and hold MENU for a specified amount of time.

  • ON1: the method that requires the up/down/up/down/enter key sequence. This is the preferred setting for IP65 fixtures that will be outdoors. Raindrops can accumulate on the display surface and simulate touches, and the standard "hold menu down for xx seconds" lock mode can potentially be unlocked by this. Requiring the passcode sequence helps to prevent this.

This information can be found in the manual for the fixtures that have a lock mode implemented.

Menu section password unlock

Many fixtures have passwords protecting certain menu items, such as the "Service" section of the menu. This is to prevent accidental or unauthorized changes to menu items that can affect fixture performance, such as calibration settings for individual attributes.

The password for these menu sections can be found in the Menu Tree section of the fixture's user manual.
