Basic vs. Standard vs. Extended Channel Modes

Basic vs. Standard vs. Extended Channel Modes

Updated 12 October 2026

Quick Answer

Use Standard Mode for general lighting setups to optimize channel allocation. Use Extended Mode when you need full 16-bit movement control, fine dimming, and individual pixel-mapping zones.

Choosing and Setting a DMX Channel Mode

DMX Profile Reference

DMX Profile

Typical channel count

Recommended application environment

Basic Mode

8 - 12 channels

Small rigs, quick setups, basic hardware controllers

Standard Mode

16 - 24 channels

Full professional console control (balanced density)

Extended Mode

30 - 100+ channels

16-bit precision, pixel mapping, media server control

Procedure

  1. Evaluate system channel limits. Calculate the total available universe outputs on your lighting console. Each universe provides 512 channels. Every fixture uses a block of channels equal to its mode's footprint, so the mode you choose determines how many fixtures fit in a universe. For example, fixtures that each use 16 channels allow 32 fixtures per universe, while fixtures that each use 32 channels allow 16.

  2. Select a profile based on show needs. Compare what each mode offers against what the show requires:

    • Basic Mode combines functions on a single channel, for example color macros and intensity. This keeps the channel footprint small, but you lose fine control and continuous dimming resolution.

    • Standard Mode puts pan, tilt, intensity, shutter, and color on separate, independent channels. This gives full control for traditional stage programming.

    • Extended Mode adds 16-bit fine channels for Pan, Tilt, and Dimmer (PAN FINE, TILT FINE, DIMMER FINE). It also adds individual sub-fixture pixel control maps. Each of these features uses extra channels, which is why the footprint is much larger.

  3. Set the mode on the fixture. Navigate to MENU > DMX CHANNEL MODE and select your target channel mode. Do this before you patch the fixture in your console. The console patches a fixed number of channels per fixture, so the mode on the fixture and the mode in the console must match. [confirm: whether the menu path is the same on all fixture ranges]

  4. Patch the fixture in your console. Choose the console fixture profile that matches the mode you selected in step 3. [confirm: how users find the matching fixture profile or personality for the console]

Technical Background and Prevention

A DMX universe has a hard physical ceiling of 512 discrete control channels.

Choosing the correct channel profile balances feature control against available universe capacity. If you match the mode to what the show needs, you avoid spending channels on features you will not use, and you keep the console patch as compact as possible.
